The Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) is a critically endangered feline species that can be found in some areas of Portugal, including the Mértola region in Alentejo. This animal, known for its agility and spotted coat, inhabits areas of dense vegetation and shrubs, such as mountain ranges and Mediterranean forests. Mértola, which is part of the Guadiana Valley Natural Park, offers an ideal environment for the recovery of this species, due to its mountainous landscape and the presence of prey such as rabbits and partridges, essential food for the lynx. However, the presence of the lynx in the area is still quite rare, and conservation efforts have been made to support its gradual return to the local ecosystem.
