The Senhora do Amparo Route, in Mértola, is a route that combines history, tradition and nature. The trail leads to the Ermida da Senhora do Amparo, a chapel located on the top of the mountain, built in devotion to Nossa Senhora do Amparo, protector of crops and livestock. For centuries, the site was an important pilgrimage site, where local communities would climb the mountain to celebrate their faith and seek protection.
The mountain range, at 264 meters above sea level, has always been a landmark in the Alentejo landscape, offering sweeping views of the region. Historians believe that, before the construction of the Christian chapel, the top of the mountain may have been used as a place of worship by ancient civilizations.
Today, the route allows visitors to relive this rich history while also exploring the tranquility of the Guadiana Valley. Walking this route is a way to connect with Mértola’s past while enjoying the unique beauty of the Alentejo.
